Here at St Andrews Podiatry, in addition to standard podiatry services we provide some specialist services. Follow the links below for more details on what we offer.
In some cases of ingrown toenails, it can be advised by the podiatrist for the patient to undergo a minor procedure involving local anaesthetic to remove either part of the offending nail or the entire nail. This alleviates pain caused by the ingrown toenail and no further treatment is required other than dressing changes post-surgery. This is a minor surgical procedure that lasts around 45 minutes after the toe is completely numbed with anaesthetic. The recovery time varies depending on the patient and treatment option. We may need to liaise with your GP to determine suitability for surgery. Please ask for details.
The Lacuna method is an effective way to treat fungal toenails. Fungal Nail Infection (Onychomyosis) is the most difficult of the superficial fungal nail infections to treat. This is because most treatments available are topical agents (sprays, ointments & nail paints), they are ineffective at penetrating the nail plate to reach the active infection on the nail bed (the skin under the nail) rather than the nail itself.
The Lacuna method involves using a specially designed micro burr to drill rows of tiny holes through the nail plate to the nail bed – the number of holes depends on the extent of the infection and the size of the nail. Anti-fungal spray is then applied to the nail daily. The spray passes through the holes and effectively reaches the infected area.
Toenails grow quite slowly so the treatment may need to be applied for up to 6 months. During this time you should attend the clinic every 4/6 weeks for nail care as more holes may need to be drilled.
A verruca is a skin infection that can be very uncomfortable. Whilst over-the-counter treatments can be used to help with the infection, the results can be poor especially when the area is badly affected. For a more effective treatment, choose Verruca Needling, a minor procedure now available in the clinic.
How does Verruca Needling work? Verruca Needling is a simple, yet effective procedure that uses the virus against itself. Using a local anaesthetic to numb the affected area, we then use a fine needle to puncture the verruca multiple times. During the needling process, infected cells are carried through to the deeper layers of the skin. This is specifically done to produce an immune response so that the verruca virus is destroyed.
Needling is an effective treatment often working following the first treatment. It is extremely useful for treating multiple verrucae. We have had great results with needling in the clinic, though if the verruca is still present 4 months after treatments a second needling session is offered at a reduced fee.
